AbstractA worldwide medical device producer is looking for a technology which will decrease or eliminate the internal wear in implantable stimulation leads. The company is interested in disruptive as well as in incremental innovation. The company is looking for joint development, licensing, contract research or technical consultancy.
Due to the constant cyclic movement of the metal conductors in the soft silicone body/housing, as a result of the beating heart, a long term wear & tear situation arises which can lead to conductor externalization. The problem be can visualized by having a number of metallic (stiff) wires sitting in a soft housing, whereby the assembly is being bent into a rather sharp curve. Due to the cyclic movement, continuously changing the curvature combined with the outward force of the wires against the internal surface of the housing, a rubbing action causes the internal wear of the housing. As the implant is required to operate for at least ten years, a very robust solution is sought.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The solution can be a material, a material modification, a coating or a construction modification or a yet unknown disruptive innovation. The device has to able to be sterilized by Ethylene Oxide (EtO) sterilization and long-term vascular biocompatibility is required. The intended implanted life-time of the solution has to surpass ten years. The current sizing (diameter of the conductor) and flexibility of the conductor has to be maintained with this solution. In case the proposed solution is a modification of the wear interface, it has to be considered that access to the wear interface (internal surface of the housing) is limited by an insert molding process of the housing. The solution has to sustain integrity in a vascular physiological environment.
