Abstract

A Greek SME active in geophysics is looking for an Israeli SME with expertise in vehicle positioning and 3D spatial visualisation, especially for roads and highways inspection. The Greek SME is the proposer of a proposal to be submitted under a bilateral Science and Technology call between Greece and Israel.

Details

Highways, roads, bridges and their pavements are infrastructures of great importance. They form the basis of urban transport and thus a continuous monitoring of their subsurface and of internal conditions is needed in order to ensure sustainable preservation of their integrity, efficiency and road safety.

In order to address the problem of non-systematic maintenance of transportation infrastructures in Greece, which in recent years has been in the phase of constructing major transportation axes, there will be a demand for continuous monitoring, using modern non-destructive methods. The European infrastructure sector, through the stimulation of such a demand, could catch up with the US technologically, where such technologies are quite developed.

The Greek SME is interested in elaborating and improving the scanning services needed for monitoring the subsurface of roads, highways and airfields, using its own private equipment and pre-existing know-how. Although progress has been made on behalf of the company to standardise some approaches and methods, it needs further work on technical and theoretical fields of pavements and roads inspection.

The SME has constructed an automatic system for the continuous monitoring of the pavement conditions using parallel data acquisition, combining GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) data and Real Time GIS data using high precision GPS and Video data.

The company seeks additional non-destructive methods, for example, moving accelerometer methods or multichannel analysis of the surface waves method (MASW) for shallow seismics.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT
The proposed project will have the following objectives:
- Improvement of the image acquisition of the road conditions and surface deterioration by a targeted 3D laser scan of the pavement surface.
- Improvement of the real time GPS positioning by using GLONASS GPS accuracy.
- Improvement of the Ground Penetrating Radar images by real-time calculation of the moisture content of the road, pattern recognition software etc.
- Improvement of the S/N in the case of ground-coupled antennas. Trials with simultaneous uses of ground-coupled and horn antennas.
- Other possible improvements in related fields.

A prototype vehicle could be constructed and tested in real conditions on major roads and airports.

Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
Information of the call: Bilateral S&T programme between Greece – Israel.
The call is currently at a pre-announcement stage.

Funding requested: Greek proposers will be financed by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology up to 400.000 Euro per proposal.
Israeli applicant(s) will be financed by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labour of Israel with an amount similar to the Greek funding.

Deadline: 31/05/2012
