Abstract
A German university institute specialised in battery research offers a new electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries that leads to improved temperature stability and safety. The performance of accumulators in mobile energy storage is significantly improved. A patent is pending. Industrial licensees are sought.
Details
Scientists at a German University research institute with a focus on batteries have invented an electrolyte additive for the formation of a stable SEI film (SEI = solid electrolyte inter-phase) on anodes for lithium-ion batteries.
These substances are used as additives for a propylene carbonate electrolyte at low concentration. During the first charge / discharge cycle the substance decomposes at the graphite electrode and forms a layer which protects the electrode surface. This results in a reduced loss of capacity in lithium-ion batteries as well as in a higher thermal stability and thus improved safety.
The development includes new previously unknown fluorinated ketones (FK). The SEI formation at the electrode significantly improves, in particular, the cycle stability.
The accumulator performance in mobile energy applications is furthermore increased by the invention
Innovative Aspects:
- Enhanced temperature stability
- Improved safety
- Suitable for long-lasting lithium-ion batteries
- Simple synthesis of the FKs
- Increased accumulator performance
