Abstract

A French SME is looking for a partner able to etch titanium using electrochemical method. Indeed, long lasting marking of titanium parts requires a new electrochemical etching process. Technical cooperation will considered for joint further development.

Details

Electrochemical marking is the only technology allowing a no-stress marking required on critical aeronautical parts: a chemical reaction is created between the metal and an a choosen electrolyte, activated by an electrical current; this reaction either gets out some metal atoms (etching) if the current is continuous, or oxidizes the metal which generally gives a contrast if the current is alternating.
Oxyde marks, which is the most common way of using electrochemical marking, are not hard-wearing enough, so that etching would be a better solution, except that, due to the properties of Titanium, etching is very difficult on that metal.
The SME is looking for better electrolytes, or a modification on the whole etching process, in order to reach several tens of micron depth on the marks.
