Abstract
A research institute at a Swiss University has developed an automatic equipment to assist knee therapy with the aim to fasten and improve rehabilitation outcomes. Therapists are able to track recovery progress over an easy-to-use interface and to set relevant training parameters for clinical and home therapy. The institute is looking for partners to collaborate in clinical studies and to introduce the product into the market.
Details
Rehabilitation therapy is a very important process to recover function after knee surgery or injury. The goal of rehabilitation is to restore full range of motion. Today, physical therapists perform relatively tedious rehabilitation exercises several times a day over a few days. Patients are instructed to continue therapeutic exercises after leaving the clinic for a few weeks, several times a day, but motivation and ability to perform exercises correctly is rather limited which often prevents from optimal recovery.
The Institute has developed an automatic orthopedic equipment to assist knee therapy with the aim to fasten and improve rehabilitation outcomes. The device can be used both in clinical and unsupervised home programs. Therapists are able to track recovery progress over an easy-to-use interface and to set relevant training parameters for clinical and home therapy. Initial tests in clinics have highlighted the benefit of technology-aided therapy for knee rehabilitation. Currently, a prototype is available for further clinical testing.
Innovative Aspects:
The developed device has the following advantages:
- Assistance of orthopedic therapy with automatic equipment;
- Progress monitoring during therapy
- High reproducibility and controllability of movements to reduce pain during treatment and to accelerate the healing process
- Clinical and home therapy
