AbstractA Greek SME, experienced in the Maritime field of Electronics, presents a series of water buoys, capable for monitoring the sea state and/or environmental parameters. The systems are easy to deploy, monitor and acquire. The Greek company is open to many types of collaboration, ranging from commercial agreement, to technical collaboration or participation in R&D projects within this expertise field.DetailsA Greek SME has long experience in maritime and oceanographic instruments & technology. The company’s know how in the area of maritime electronics is found in various research and development projects and products. Among the company’s products is a current measurement buoy that was created in cooperation with National Authorities. The system is portable and easily deployed. It records currents in sea-areas of interest (sea ports, by the sea hotels, etc). The system depicts, in special created software, important information regarding wave direction and speed of various sea depths (sea surface up to 50meters depth). The buoy may be used in situations where there is a need to measure the dissemination of water pollutants in water environments at surface or subsurface (up to 50m) mode. The system was used during Athens 2004 Olympics. The system also operates in the wave monitoring and forecasting program, funded by the Ministry of Development, for Greek maritime sector. The system monitors & forecasts waves’ behavior and sea condition. The uses of this system may reflect sea transportation area in terms of risk reduction. The system consists of a monitoring station (which may be placed either on land or aboard the deployment/retrieval vessel), and the drifter fleet. The drifters’ positioning exploits the highly accurate GPS system. Some of the main characteristics of the system are: • Use of GSM and RF technology for communication. • A modular design allowing two configurations, thus enabling the monitoring of surface and subsurface currents (down to 50 m). • A potent, user-friendly software offering real-time monitoring and interactive programming during the mission, a vessel-guiding module for the retrieval of the drifters, and extensive data analysis features (assessment of mean and eddy velocity and kinetic energy fields, lagrangian statistics, horizontal diffusion coefficients, spectral analysis). • The software allows the import and analysis of any drifter data. The system has a smart design that allows the instrument to be easily transferred and deployed. Additionally the construction is robust and uses low cost sea telecommunications (low and high bandwidth) system installed. The instrument may be tracked by vessel with the use of smart software even over extreme conditions. A low cost version of the buoy was created mainly for the surface directional wave monitoring. Innovative Aspects: Some innovations include: • A modular design allowing two configurations, thus enabling the monitoring of surface and subsurface currents (down to 50 m). • A potent, user-friendly software offering real-time monitoring and interactive programming during the mission, a vessel-guiding module for the retrieval of the drifters and extensive data analysis features (Assessment of mean and eddy velocity and kinetic energy fields, lagrangian statistics, horizontal diffusion coefficients, spectral analysis). • The software allows the import and analysis of any drifter data. The system has specially designed electronics with sea/maritime standards, able to withstand much longer in tough sea environmental conditions.
